Open Access
- Pure has been the University's Institutional Repository since December 1st 2017. Read the Open Access guidance to ensure you deposit your research outputs in Pure within the correct timeframe.

- Please ensure you check any applicable funder requirements for Open Access BEFORE publishing.

How Can I Determine Which Journals To Publish In?
Researchers work hard to produce high quality outputs. Publishing your research in high quality publications has benefits for both the authors, institution and the wider academic community. If you would benefit from a short list of fully open access, or hybrid open access journals that would be suitable for future publications, please contact the Open Access Manager within Research and Enterprise on oa@hud.ac.uk. We can provide a list of journals in your field with a number of quality indicators including:
- Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, including tools that can be used to assess the strength of a journal.
- CiteScore measures average citations received per document published in the serial.
- SCImago Journal Rank measures weighted citations received by the serial. Citation weighting depends on subject field and prestige (SJR) of the citing serial.
- Source Normalized Impact per Paper measures actual citations received relative to citations expected for the serial’s subject field.
- JCR (Journal Citation Reports) to determine the impact factors for journals in the sciences and social sciences.
- SHERPA/FACT is a tool to check if the journals in which you wish to publish comply with your funder's requirements for open access to research.
- Checking inclusion in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), which is an online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals and in the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE), which provides leadership in thinking on publication ethics and practical resources to educate and support members.

Beware of Predatory Publishers, Journals and Conferences!
- These can range from scams to poor quality publications that have no peer review process. Publishing in credible places with reputable publishers has many benefits.
- Things to watch out for include (but are not limited to):
- Poor grammar/spelling
- Fictitious information such as editorial board names, institutions, contact details etc.
- Covers a vastly multidisciplinary scope
- Lack of peer-review details or process
- Lack of contact details or only a webform available for contact
- Fraudulent claims such as impact factor or claims to be indexed when it is not
- Authors should always investigate unsolicited emails or phone calls from people claiming to invite you to a previously unknown conference or to publish in a previously unknown journal.

Assessing Research Impact
- Bibliometrics has a summary of of bibliometrics and an overview of which tools and websites you can use to assess the impact of your publications.
